Zambia Led Prevention Initiative (ZPI) Program
The Zambia-Led Prevention Initiative (ZPI) Program is a USAID funded project that was awarded to Academy for Education Development’s Center on AIDS & Community Health to implement from August 2010 to December 2014. The project is aimed at increasing utilization of community-level interventions through a targeted approach and provides technical leadership and expertise on comprehensive, effective, community-based prevention efforts aimed at reducing HIV transmission in Zambia. The project is working with the private sector to direct, manage, and sustain these interventions as part of a broader response to the HIV epidemic in Zambia.
ZHECT’s mandate in the ZPI project is to ensure that communities affected by HIV/AIDS access more effective, gender sensitive, and high-quality HIV and AIDS prevention programs, including Testing & Counseling (TC). This is being achieved by implementing effective workplace-based programs by engaging the private-sector leadership and their surrounding communities through social mobilization process. ZHECT is implementing the project in five provinces of Zambia namely; Eastern, Southern, Northwestern, Central and the Copper belt and the organisation’s project activities hinge on building the capacities of workplaces and surrounding communities to respond to their specific challenges. This is done through training of various cadres including Behaviour Change Promoters such as Peer Educators and Lay Counselors who in-turn share information with co-workers, family and church members and members of surrounding communities in a manner that is culturally acceptable.
Other partners in the implementation of the ZPI project are the Population Council, Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), Project Concern International (PCI), Afya Mzuri, Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Management Program (CHAMP), Hodi and Grassroot Soccer Zambia.
