CORRIDORS OF HOPE (COH) III is a five-year HIV/AIDS prevention project running from 1st October 2009 to 30th September 2014.   

COH III is funded by USAID/PEPFAR and implemented by Roads, (a project undertaking HIV/AIDS activities in Southern and Central Africa), Family Health International (FHI360) and a consortium of three Zambian Non-Governmental organizations.

FHI360 contracted three Zambian organisations to implement the activities.

  1. ZHECT (Zambia Health Education and Communications Trust)
  2. ZINGO (Zambia Interfaith networking Group on HIV/AIDS)
  3. Afya Mzuri

Goals of the project:

  • Decrease HIV transmission, morbidity and mortality among most at risk and the general population.
  • Change community norms on sexual behaviour.
  • Build local capacity and enhance sustainability beyond the life span of the project.

Partner mandates:

ZHECT is the overall manager of all ten sites that are found in Livingstone, Kazungula, Solwezi, Kapiri Mposhi, Chipata, Chirundu,  Nakonde, Chililabombwe, Sesheke and Katete.

ZHECT in addition to managing all sites is responsible for providing HIV counselling & testing (CT/VCT) as well as  diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). In addition, Family Planning, Malaria and
Tuberculosis (TB) screening services are also offered. Clients who test HIV positive are referred for continuum of care and linked to other services in all the sites.

Target Groups:

  • Long Distance Truck Drivers
  • Women, as they are socially, culturally and economically disadvantaged
  • Commercial sex workers and their clients
  • Youth in and out of school
  • Sexually abused
  • Discordant couples (were one partner is tested HIV positive and the other negative.)
  • Uniformed personnel
  • Any other vulnerable members of the community

Afya Mzuri is primarily responsible for implementing all aspects of Behaviour Change Communications.

ZINGO (Zambia Interfaith Networking Group on HIV/AIDS) provides services through networking with Faith-based and Community based organizations at each project site in reaching out to in and out of school youth, adults and families in churches, mosques and schools. ZINGO will also deals with advocacy and economic empowerment aspects of the project.

COH Services Provided: 

  • Free HIV counselling and testing including couple counselling.
  • Free diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI’s).
  • Behaviour change programmes reinforced through social mobilisation activities.
  • Abstinence and be faithful activities targeting youth.
  • Targeted promotion and distribution, correct and consistent condom use.
  • Referral services for continuum of care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Consideration of the special needs of women and girls such as the impact of HIV/AIDS on gender, the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection in young women.
  • Increased male involvement in HIV/AIDS prevention activities.
  • Linkages to vocational skills and training for women and youth.
  • Reproductive Health services (Family Planning).
  • Screening for Malaria.
  • Screening for Tuberculosis.
  • Promotion & provision of Male Circumcision (MC) in collaboration with Society for Family Health (SFH).
